Fire Apparatus Unit Identifiers
Fire apparatus identifiers are structured in three parts:
- First Part: Unit Type - Indicates the type of apparatus. Examples include: Engine (standard fire engine), Aid (EMS aid units), Tender (water transport units for areas without hydrants), Rescue (specialized rescue units), and Medic (Medic One advanced life support transport units).
- Second Part: District Number - Identifies the fire district the apparatus belongs to.
- Third Part: Station Number or Unit Number - Represents the station or specific unit within the district.
Examples:
Engine34 - Engine from District 3, Station 4.
Aid91 - Aid unit from District 9, Station 1.
Rescue81 - Rescue unit from District 8, Station 1.
EngineO1 - "Engine Oh One" (Engine from Olympia Station 1).
EngineT2 - "Engine Tee Two" (Engine from Tumwater, Station 2).
Medic10 - Medic units are identified by their unit numbers and strategically stationed throughout the county.
Fire and Medical Tones
Fire and Medical dispatch tones: Fire Dispatch Channels
The first set of tones trigger radios, pagers, etc. The last set of tones are described below.
- Alternating High / Low Tones: Indicates a Fire tone. Working fire, fire alarm, salvage call, wires down, etc.
- Same Tone On and Off: Indicates a Medical Call. ALS, BLS, MVA, Patient Assist, etc.

- 1 - Thurston County Sheriff's Office (TCSO)
- 2 - Olympia Police Department (OPD)
- 3 - Lacey Police Department
- 4 - Tumwater Police Department
- 5 - Tenino Police Department (Covers Rainier and Bucoda)
- 6 - Yelm Police Department
- 7 - Rainier Police Department (No longer in use)
- 8 - Nisqually Tribal Police
- 9 - Thurston County Coroner's Office
- 10 - Thurston County TCOMM Employees
Call Sign Explanation
Officer call signs are structured in three parts:
- First Part: Department - e.g., 1 for TCSO, 2 for OPD - (See above identifiers)

Second Part: Phonetic designation indicating roles or responsibilities:
- Paul: Patrol
- Sam: Sergeant
- Lincoln: Lieutenant
- Frank: Foot Patrol (specific to OPD)
- King: K-9 or School Resource Officer (SRO)
- Ida: Detective
- X-Ray: Extra or emphasis unit
- Ocean: Outreach or crisis response
- Union: Community Service Officers (CSO)
- TCSO: TCSO will use area designators: Adam area, Boy area, etc. See Sheriff Response District Map
- Third Part: Officer's identification number
